Course Description

You want to learn

  • You may have bought a GPS, or are thinking of buying one. You may be a complete beginner or have just tried the basics of getting a location fix or navigating to a waypoint or destination, but are not comfortable  with the features or your GPS or Smartphone app, or things like transferring routes, tracks etc from and to your PC or Mac.
  • You want to learn types of devices and software available, and what they are best suited to
  • To practice in the field and learn how to use the common and most useful features of a device or Smartphone app, until you are comfortable with them
  • Setting routes and waypoints on a PC or Mac, transferring and using tracks etc. This will equip you with the ability to plan routes for walks safely and easily, then use your device in the field
  • And you want to understand map and compass basics to check what your device is telling you, and as a back up if it fails.

The beautiful Peak District was the UK’s first National Park and is the site of the first mass trespass in 1932, opening up the hills for everyone as the start of the right to roam. So it really is the birth of hill walking in the UK!

Its 555 square miles is split to the north by the rugged Dark Peak, and to the south to the gentler, rolling and stunning White Peak.

The Dark Peak is ideal for navigation training. Famous areas such as Bleaklow and Kinder Scout offer wild and remote terrain, often with large expanses of featureless moor so your instructor can really help you hone your micro navigation. From gritstone crags, to reservoirs and wide cloughs and grouphs, the Dark Peak provides you a fantastic mix of terrain upon which to learn navigation at all levels, and right where it all started!
